Legacy in Wood

Ambekke Dewalaya

Embekke Devalaya, built in the 14th century by King Vikramabahu III during the Gampola Kingdom, is a renowned Sinhalese wood-carving masterpiece dedicated to Kataragama Deviyo. Its famous Hewisi Mandapaya features over 500 unique carvings of dancers, wrestlers, mythical beasts, and daily life, showcasing six centuries of Sri Lankan artistry.

Colonial Bastion

Galle Fort

First built by the Portuguese in 1588 and extensively fortified by the Dutch from the 17th century onwards, Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fortified city is a unique blend of European architecture and South Asian traditions, with its ramparts enclosing a vibrant, living town.

The Great Stupa

Ruwanwelisaya

Constructed by King Dutugemunu around 140 B.C., the Ruwanwelisaya is one of the world's tallest ancient monuments and a highly revered site for Buddhists. Located in Anuradhapura, it is believed to enshrine the largest collection of the Buddha's relics in the world, making it a focal point of worship and national pride.

The Lion Rock

Sigiriya

This ancient rock fortress, built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD, rises dramatically from the central plains. The complex includes the remnants of a palace on its summit, a pair of colossal lion's paws, and walls covered in vibrant frescoes, known as the Sigiriya Maidens, showcasing remarkable ancient artistry and urban planning.

Cradle of Buddhism

Thuparamaya

Believed to be the first Buddhist stupa built in Sri Lanka, Thuparamaya dates back to the 3rd century BC during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa. It was constructed at the request of Mahinda Thera, who introduced Buddhism to the island, and it enshrines the sacred right collar-bone of the Buddha, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's history.

Ancient Shiva Shrine

Thiruketheeswaram Kovil

Recognized as one of the five ancient Ishwarams of Lord Shiva in Sri Lanka, Thiruketheeswaram has been a revered Hindu pilgrimage site for over two millennia. Legends connect the temple to the epic Ramayana, suggesting it was built by Mayan, the father-in-law of King Ravana. It stands as a testament to the island's deep-rooted Shaivite traditions.

Land of Masks

Ambalangoda

The coastal town of Ambalangoda is the heartland of Sri Lanka's traditional mask craftsmanship. For generations, artisans have carved vibrant and expressive wooden masks used in folk dramas (Kolam) and healing rituals (Sanni). This living heritage offers a unique glimpse into the island's folklore and ancient beliefs.

Sacred Buddhist Temple

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Located in the cultural capital of Kandy, the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) stands as one of the most sacred and historically significant landmarks in Sri Lanka. Enshrined within this majestic temple is the revered tooth relic of Lord Buddha, symbolizing both spiritual purity and ancient sovereignty. The temple’s intricate architecture reflects the grandeur of Kandyan craftsmanship, blending traditional Sinhalese artistry with influences from other Asian cultures. Beautifully carved wooden pillars, golden roofs, and tranquil courtyards create an atmosphere of deep devotion and serenity. Beyond its religious importance, the temple plays a vital role in Sri Lankan heritage — hosting the world-famous Esala Perahera, an annual grand procession that celebrates the sacred relic with music, dance, and cultural pageantry. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sri Dalada Maligawa remains not only a beacon of Buddhist faith but also a timeless testament to the island’s rich cultural legacy, drawing thousands of pilgrims and visitors who come seeking blessings and inspiration.
